Raksha Bandhan - Sacred Bonding

Raksha Bandhan - the second sacred bond between a male and female is the brother sister relationship. The auspicious day is celebrated by both brother and sister. The sister pray for the well being of the brother and brother takes an oath of protecting her till his death. 

Origin of Raksha Bandhan

The word Raksha Bandhan originated from Sanskrit. The word "Raksha" means "protection" and "Bandhan" means "tying together". Raksha Bandhan is not limited to blood relations alone. Regardless of races, community and religion this day is celebrated.

Who celebrates Raksha Bandhan?

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu and Jain festival. It is common among Indian and Nepalese. This day falls on the full moon day of sharwan, the fourth month of the Biram Sambat(the official Nepali calendar) and the fifth month of Hindu calendar. 
This festival is most popular in the northern region. In the modern India especially the young generation has wholeheartedly involved in showering their sisterly and brotherly affection. 

How Raksha Bandhan is celebrated?

Rakhi is the special sacred thread which plays a major role. The sister ties Rakhi on the wrist of her brother or a person whom she treats as a brother. And prays for well being of her brother with all fortune. Brother's reciprocate by taking oath to protect her till his death. They also offer their sister with the gift she loves the most.
Every state has their own celebrations for Raksha Bandhan.

Northern States

Uttarakhand celebrate this day in the name of "Janau" and ties Rakhi to all her brothers. 
Jammu and Kashmir - people fly wide range of Kites before the month of this particular day.
Rajasthani and Marwadi - ties rakhi to  their sister in laws, as she is responsible for their brother's well being.
Gujarati & Punjabi - celebrate this day in the name of "Lumba Rakhi"(colourful and attractive rakhi).

Eastern states

West Bengal and Odisha - celebrate this day in the name of "Jhulan purnima" where Lord Krishna and Radha is worshipped.

Southern states

Maharashtra - celebrate this day in the name of "Naarali Purnima" where the sea is worshipped and coconut offered to the sea.
Tamil Nadu and Kerala - celebrate this day in the name of "Avani Avittam".

Western states

It is celebrated in the name of "Pavitropana " where the women worship Lord Shiva to forgive their past sins.

Central India 

It is celebrated in the name of "Kajari Purnima" where the form is worship there land mothers.
